The Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching provides graduates with the knowledge, skills and capabilities to gain a rewarding career in secondary education. The Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching is a very successful programme at AUT, with graduates being sought after by secondary schools. The lecturing staff has extensive experience as secondary teachers and teacher educators. Programme Code: AK3515 Level: 7 Points: 120 Duration: One year full time / Equivalent part time Venue: North Shore Campus Starting date: 3 March 2008 / 21 July 2008 Application deadline: 16 November 2007 / 27 June 2008 Two intakes a year is a special feature of the programme. AUT encourages early application. Late applications will be accepted if the programme is not full. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS In order to be admitted to the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching, applicants shall have: - Completed a three year degree, or equivalent, in a subject relevant to the secondary school curriculum

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE This programme provides an equal balance of professional study (based at the University), and practical experience (based in secondary schools), ensuring that graduates have the skills to be effective teachers. Placement in four different schools offers an opportunity to experience a wide range of learning environments. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Student teachers who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma are eligible to seek provisional registration as a teacher and apply for teaching positions in secondary schools. PAPERS The Graduate Diploma in Secondary Training is modular in structure, and is made up of four four-week taught papers and four four-week placements in a secondary school. The Papers are taught in the following order: 296202 Teaching for Learning A (Campus based) 296203 Teaching for Learning B (School placement) 297206 Developing the Curriculum in Society A (Campus based) 297207 Developing the Curriculum in Society B (School placement) 297204 Assessing Student Learning A (Campus based) 297211 Assessing Student Learning B (School placement) 297208 Developing Professional Practice and Research A (Campus based) 297209 Developing Professional Practice and Research B (School placement) Assessment practices are competency based, and designed to monitor progress through the eight papers. Assessment criteria are given at the start of each paper, and may be based on individual or group projects. There are no examinations, and students are able to resubmit if individual criteria are not met.
