Graduate Certificates and Diplomas

Australia offers students both Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas. Australian postgraduate degrees can provide a pathway to earning a masters degree or provide a student with specific knowledge and skills.

The Graduate Certificate typically takes six months in duration. Graduate certificates broaden individual skills already gained in an undergraduate program, or develop vocational knowledge and skills in a new professional area.

A Graduate Diploma typically takes one year in duration. Graduate diplomas provide further specialization within a particular subject or body of knowledge.

Masters Degrees

A master’s degree can be completed in one year in many disciplines in Australia, although 1.5 to two years is not uncommon. However one year masters programmes can demand an honours degree, honours degrees in Australia are four year programmes. In Australian universities, two types of masters degrees are available:

Masters by Coursework involves a program of classes in your major and typically a smaller research project.
Masters by Research often involves intensive, self-directed research leading to production of a thesis or major research project.

PhD programs

Students typically spend three to five years of self-directed research leading up to a major dissertation. Students may also earn Professional Doctorate degrees in fields such as psychology, education and law.
